Geotextile These are flexible textile fabrics of controlled permeability used to provide filtration, separation or reinforcement in soil, rock and waste material.Geotextile mat has been secured on the ground surface, seed(usually grass) is sown through the mat & mixture of topsoil & seed then brushed over the mat to completely feel it. The celluler geotextiles are used for reinforcing the topsoil layer. The cellular geotextile is formed from a mechanically bonded nonwoven products which has been partially impregnated with resin in order to give it slight rigidity.

The four main sub-divisions of surface reinforcement geotextiles are:

  • Thick three dimensional mats
  • Cellular geotextiles
  • Geotextiles woven from thick, widely spaced yarns
  • High profile geotextiles nets.

In the road industry there are four primary uses for geotextiles: separation, drainage, filtration and reinforcement. In separation, inserting a properly designed geotextile will keep layers of different sized particles separated from one another. In drainage, water is allowed to pass either downward through the geotextile into the subsoil, or laterally within the geotextile which functions as a drain. How it is used depends on the drainage requirements of the application. In filtration, the fabric allows water to move through the soil while restricting the movement of soil particles. In reinforcement, the geotextile can actually strengthen the earth or it can increase apparent soil support. For example, when placed on sand it distributes the load evenly to reduce rutting.

Geotextiles now are most widely used for stabilizing roads through separation and drainage. When the native soil beneath a road is very silty, or constantly wet and mucky, for example, its natural strength may be too low to support common traffic loads, and it has a tendency to shift under those loads. Although the subgrade may be reinforced with a base course of gravel, water moving upward carries soil fines or silt particles into the gravel, reducing its strength. Geotextiles keep the layers of subgrade and base materials separate and manage water movement through or off the roadbed.

Geotextile or Geofabrics: Geotextiles form one of the two largest groups of geosynthetic materials. They are indeed textiles in the traditional sense, but consist of synthetic fibres (all are polymer-based) rather than natural ones such as cotton, wool, jute ` Thus, biodegradation and subsequent short lifetime is not a problem. These synthetic fibres are made into flexible, porous fabrics by standard weaving machinery or they are matted together in a random nonwoven manner. Some are also knitted.

The major point is that geotextiles are porous to liquid flow across their manufactured plane and also within their thickness, but to widely varying degree. There are at least 100 specific application areas for geotextiles that have been developed; however, the fabric always performs at least one of four discrete functions: separation, reinforcement, filtration and/or drainage.

Geotextiles are the largest group of geosynthetics in terms of volume. They are used in geotechnical engineering, heavy construction, building and pavement construction, hydrogeology and environmental engineering, etc. In other words, permeable geosynthetic comprised solely of textiles. Geotextiles are used with foundations, soil, rock, earth or any other related material as an integral part of human made project, structure, or system. The possible applications of geotextiles in civil engineering field have been successfully developed and have more beneficial effect in terms of economics, durability and performance

Erosion of earth embankments by wave action, currents and repeated drawdown is a constant problem requiring the use of non-erodable protection in the form of rock beaching or mattress structures. Beneath these is placed a layer of geotextile to prev Due to their high soil fabric friction coefficient and high tensile strength, heavy grades of geotextiles are used to reinforce earth structures allowing the use of local fill material.

Geotextiles are used in the civil construction, especially in roads and fills to improve soil characteristics. The recent popularity of Geotextiles makes a poor soil more manageable and making possible to build in places where otherwise would be impossible. Geotextiles are ideal materials for infrastructure works such as roads, harbors, and many others.Geotextiles are highly advantageous for various different projects. It is important that you use them whenever you need to tackle complex situations in which you have to set up some sort of moisture barrier, you need drainage or two soils have to be separated. Just make sure that you know everything about proper installation. In so many situations we see people that simply try such a project alone, without professional supervision. Improper geotextile installation basically removes all the advantages we highlighted above.

In separation functions geotextiles keep fines in the subgrade from migrating into the base course. Tests show that it takes only about 20% by weight of subgrade soil mixed into the base course to reduce its bearing capacity to that of the subgrade. This problem usually is due to the movement of large amounts of water. When large loads cross the surface of the roadway they set up a pumping action which accelerates this water movement and soil particle migration, and speeds up the failure of the road.

Two important criteria for selecting a geotextile for separation are permeability and strength. The geotextile used for separation must allow water to move through it while retaining the soil fines or sand particles. It should let water pass through it at the same rate or slightly faster than the adjacent soil. It must also retain the smallest soil particle size without clogging or plugging. Figure 4 is a diagram of the application of a geotextile as a separator

A geotextile is typically defined as any permeable textile material used to increase soil stability, provide erosion control or aid in drainage. More simply put, if it is made of fabric and buried in the ground it is probably a geotextile These early geotextile applications were basically natural fiber or vegetation mixed directly with soil. Modern geotextiles are usually made from a synthetic polymer such as polypropylene, polyester, polyethylene and polyamides. Geotextiles can be woven, knitted or non-woven. Varying polymers and manufacturing processes result in an array of geotextiles suitable for a variety of civil construction applications.
